looking for stools
lapenn wrote in hip_domestics
We have this kitchen island from Ikea. It's hard to tell from the picture, but there is seating for two on the opposite side. We are looking for some bar stools to put there, and I can't find any that are white and oak colored like the island itself. We'd prefer something with backs if possible.

Suggestions? I'd even entertain something different colored if it would look good with the island. I'm just at a loss and not even sure where all to look anymore.

Re: cost, under $100 each would be nice but over isn't a deal-breaker. We only need two, and I want to make sure we get something that looks good and is durable rather than save money and get something that doesn't look as nice.

Spray Painted Headboard

I posted a while ago, asking for suggestions on what colour to spray paint a brass headboard. I ended up choosing white, and I'm putting before and after photos under the cut here.</lj-cutCollapse )

OTW Fannews: Collaborative playgrounds
otw_staff wrote in otw_news
  • It's not only communication between entertainment creators and fans that's becoming common, but also a creative dialogue. Anna Pinkert at Spinoff Online wrote about the benefits of embracing slash and other fan creations. "At a recent event, a reporter showed The Avengers star Mark Ruffalo a series of drawings of his character snuggling with Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark. He began giggling, and then even made up captions for one of the cartoons, “Would you like a gummy worm?” Better yet, he told the reporter, “I endorse [this art] 100 percent. You know what it is? It’s open-source creativity.” She suggests that "[h]omoerotic fan art might be a new signal that you’ve arrived in Hollywood. People know your face (and your abs) well enough to do 30 sketches of you embracing another star." At least some actors are ready to invite fans to play.

Strategic Planning Update #9
otw_staff wrote in otw_news
Statement of Purpose

The Strategic Planning Committee is continuing to work on helping the OTW develop a strategic plan for the next 3 - 5 years. As a quick refresher, the first stage of this plan is to survey internal stakeholders. We are in the process of interviewing all committees in turn and creating a report on each committee. The reports only include information that is gathered from the committees themselves, and all the conclusions and recommendations come from aggregating the data of those surveyed. Small home/unusable closet space questions and holiday decor issues -
bluefalconchick wrote in hip_domestics
I live in a pretty small house, and am having some issues with my closet. I do not have the knowledge to redo the closet or the cash to pay someone else, so I'm hoping you guys can help me out. I have a dresser and a chest of drawers, so clothes storage isn't an issue, but I have a really long and not-deep-at-all closet (with two doors, but one is blocked by my godkids' bed for when they visit), and I'd like to figure out how to best use the space. I don't have a lot of clothes that hang up (I have some that HAVE to hang up, but most are foldable), and I want to figure out how to get the best use out of the closet, with my hanging organizer (I keep sweaters in it because I've no room in the drawers for them), and my stackable purse and shoe containers. I know I cannot put the shoe containers in the unreachable portion of the closet because, well, SHOES. I may decide to put the purse containers back there, but I'd rather have them at my disposal, because, well, PURSES. I also would prefer to not have anything hanging over the door because my only full-length mirror is on the inside of the non-blocked closet door. I have some shelves, but I have my sheets and blankets on those (as well as blankets in a trunk in the back of the closet too-I live in a house without central heating and air!). Does anyone know of a good closet organizational plan? I'm getting really frustrated with my current jumble of mess in there.

I also have a small issue with my hall closet (AKA, my craft closet). I have shelves in it, but the space is really unusable because the closet is very narrow, and very deep. I was thinking of getting some of those fabric boxes or some baskets, and setting them on the shelf to store crafty stuffs in, but I worry about my ability to get to them if need be.

*Side note: I cannot interchange the things in these two closets because the hall closet is NOWHERE NEAR my bedroom, and I really need to have my clothes in my bedroom.

Also, and this is more of a holiday decor question, my family has always decorated for EVERY. SINGLE. HOLIDAY. Mom bought me a cute flag for my door for Memorial Day and the Fourth of July, and I love it-It's adorable...but it gets caught in the wind and bangs against the door...I've already "answered" the door four times today. I think if I attached something heavy to the bottom, it would stop this, but I have no idea what would work...It's not a full sized flag, probably only about 2.5 feet X 1.5 feet. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance! <3

OTW Fannews: Separate by intention?
otw_staff wrote in otw_news
  • Given media representations apparently a lot of people continue to think that female fandom projects are rare, although this may have to do with how gender segregated fandom projects often are. In a feature on the "Hello Sweetie" podcast, its founder discusses why it came into being. "She and others were listening...to 'Geek Show Podcast,' the popular online show started by X96’s 'Radio From Hell' host Kerry Jackson, local movie critics Jeff Vice and Jimmy Martin, and Tribune TV critic Scott D. Pierce. "'They never have any female panelists, rarely had female guests, and a lot of people were complaining about that,'"...On one episode of 'Geek Show Podcast,' one of the hosts said, 'If you [women] want to have a podcast, you should start one.'"

College graduation gifts.
mayfair wrote in hip_domestics
I know this doesn't necessarily fit in with the criteria of this community, but I'm desperate for some help!

My best friend of 14 years is graduating from college this month. A lot of my friends have graduated, but this is my best friend so it's different. I have NO idea what to give her as a gift. I've heard that you shouldn't give friends money as grad gifts, so that's out. She has a Pandora bracelet but doesn't really wear it. She isn't moving into an apartment or house or anything and she doesn't have a new job lined up so I can't really get her something as like a "new life" gift. Basically, I'm stuck. What's appropriate for a college graduation gift that isn't tacky? I want it to be thoughtful, but I cannot think of anything. I mean, she loves shoes but I feel like giving her a pair of shoes as a graduation present is kind of weird. I'm so stuck! Any ideas?

852 Prospect - AO3 Supports our Sentinel*
otw_staff wrote in otw_news
The OTW is delighted to welcome 852 Prospect -- the Sentinel Adult Fiction Archive -- to its new home within the Archive of Our Own. The Archivists of 852 Prospect (most recently alicettlg) have worked hard in conjunction with ADT and Open Doors to make this move a reality.

There's some special history associated with this move. 852 Prospect was the first automated fiction archive on the web. Back in 1997, astolat wrote the first version of the Automated Archive software for 852 Prospect, which made it possible for authors to post their stories simultaneously to a mailing list and to an archive, and which also made it possible for archivists to maintain fic archives without hand-coding every post. The automated archive software is now old and creaky and no longer maintained; we're delighted to be able to offer 852 Prospect a new home as an integrated collection within the AO3.

OTW Fannews: Cultural Triggers
otw_staff wrote in otw_news

  • While in some places fanfic writers are getting arrested, in others the concern is instead about how fans could be ruining pop culture. "Mr. Rushfield laments that fan culture is set in its ways and does not want to be challenged. I think this is an oversimplification...Yes of course, some fans will never be happy. Some fans say and do things I find shocking and disrespectful, but I think that this is a very small minority...To think that this subset of fans is the driving force behind any artistic decisions, is not giving enough credit to writers and producers in entertainment."
